An Evening Program Qualifying Candidates to Receive a:
Certificate in Object Relations Psychotherapy
Additional Day Classes during the Third & Fourth Years will Qualify Candidates for a:
Certificate in Object
Relations Psychoanalysis
Eligibility
Training at the Object Relations Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis is open to all mental health practitioners with graduate degrees, such as M.D. psychiatrists, Ph.D.s in clinical psychology, CSWs, DSWs, or Ph.D.s in social work, and MAs in psychiatric nursing. Applicants with other advanced degrees will be considered by the selection committee and are welcome to apply for psychoanalytic and psychotherapy training. Applicants with alternate degrees must make arrangements for malpractice insurance through appropriate channels that take into consideration their acceptance for psychoanalytic institute training and for continuous case supervision.
Overview
Certificate in Object Relations Psychotherapy: Candidates in this program attend classes and group supervision exclusively in the evening. In addition to classes, candidates are required to be in individual supervision for one hour a week at a time convenient to them and the chosen supervisor from the Object Relations Institute's approved list of supervisors. Candidates have to meet a minimum requirement of 40 individual hours of supervision per year. Courses are held Thursday evenings from 6:15 PM until 9:15 PM throughout the entire four years of training. Classes take place at the individual instructors' offices.
Certificate in Object Relations Psychoanalysis: Students who choose, after two years of training, to qualify for the certificate in psychoanalysis, there will be an additional two classes to be taken on Wednesday mornings from 8:15/8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, during the third and fourth years of their training. These candidates will also be required to attend a second individual supervisory hour, as well as additional hours for their own psychoanalytic treatment (personal analysis).
Your psychotherapy and psychoanalytic training will consist of five segments:
1. Academic: The theoretical part of the program has been established with a consideration for the roots and development of object relations thinking as an outgrowth and extension of traditional psychoanalysis. Introductory, beginning, and advanced classes are offered in the learning of each of the major object relations theorists, as well as further courses in related theorists extending the work of these original theorists. The clinical use and case application of each theorist's theory is focused on in class. Candidates are exposed to the clinical cases of senior faculty, and are encouraged to engage in dialogues concerning the faculty members own internal process when in connection with that teacher's own patients. The internal processing of the teacher with his/her own patients is then looked at in light of readings that are discussed in class on object relations teaching and theory. Candidates are encouraged to then join in by presenting their own cases in light of readings and course topics. The actual clinical application of all theoretical ideas is the primary focus throughout.
2. Clinical Supervision: Candidates choose ORI supervisors with whom they can relate the detailed process of their clinical work with their own patients. Candidates are referred patients through ORI's affiliated referral service whenever possible. The patients referred from the referral service are generally people looking for sliding scale fees. For more information about the Referral Service, please contact Dr. Gladys Foxe at (212) 877-1575, or click here for more information.
3. Group Supervision: Complementary to this is the group supervision experience within the overall program. Group supervision is offered throughout the four years of training, and works in interaction with the theory classes. In group supervision candidates tune into their own internal process as it occurs in conjunction with the internal process of their patients, and they learn to understand their own experience while in the room with the patient, as a critical focus for both engaging with the patient and for understanding the patient. The faculty member who conducts the group facilitates this process. Candidates also are free to express feelings towards each other in these groups, and the nature of these feeling experiences can be related back to their feeling experiences with their patients.
Also, as a trusting atmosphere is established candidates find this environment one safe enough for them to share concerns they may have about the institute and their participation within it, or concerns about difficulties they may be having in any area of their institute training. This focus is then more fully explored in conjunction with individual advisors.4. Training Analysis: Candidates are also required to be in treatment themselves during the course of the four year program at least two times a week for the first two year and then three times per week for years three and four of the program, preferably with an object relations psychoanalyst. Those in treatment with a training analyst from the institute can benefit most from experiencing first hand the nature of object relations treatment. Candidates are given a list of training analysts within the Object Relations Institute, from whom they can choose an analyst. Modification to fees is decided upon by your training analyst.
5. Case Presentation: Candidates in the psychotherapy track are required to propose and write a paper in which they demonstrate adequate knowledge of the process of the clinical work, and the psychic structure and initial pathology of the patient, and the theoretical constructs that have informed their treatment. The psychic change process should be indicated along with the treatment approach, and a good integration of theoretical knowledge should be shown. The case selected for presentation should be in treatment twice a week for two years. Candidates who choose the psychoanalysis track need to demonstrate how psychoanalytic work proceeds with a patient who attends sessions with them at least three times a week for two years.

Advisors
Advisors are members of the training committee who have volunteered to meet with a number of candidates on an individual basis to discuss all matters pertaining to the candidates' experience at the institute. If the candidate has any questions about requirements, or difficulties of any kind, he/she is encouraged to seek the mentorship, as well as the information, provided by the advisor. Candidates can call and ask to speak with or meet with their advisors at any time throughout the course of their training.CERTIFICATION
With the completion of all required course work, supervision, clinical work, personal psychoanalysis and the final paper, the student will be recommended for graduation and certification. The final decision regarding each candidate's suitability for certification rests with the training committee.
- Candidates who complete the four year (Thursday) evening program in training as a psychotherapist will receive a Certificate in "Object Relations Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy."

The Object Relations Institute maintains a referral service that provides clients to ORI candidates who do not already have their own clients for clinical practice.
The referral service is coordinated by Gladys Foxe, Ph.D. Clients referred from the referral service are generally individuals who require sliding scale fees.
Candidate who receive referred clients from ORI, must submit proof of their liability insurance coverage to the Object Relations Institute administrative office.
Referral service policies can be obtained in writing from the institute. Candidates receiving referrals must agree to the fee set for their patients by the referral service coordinator, or to the range of fees recommended, although the raising of fees can be discussed by the candidate with the patient after the first year of treatment has elapsed, and after discussion with their institute supervisor.
